What is that Blue Stuff in Portable Toilets?

If you’ve ever wondered about this, the answer is simple. It’s a mixture of chemicals designed to deodorize, stop bacteria growth, and hide what lies beneath the surface! There are generally four types of ingredients in there, a combination of dye, biocides, detergents, and fragrance.

Portable Restroom Deodorizer in Edmonton

  • The biocides prevent the growth of odor-causing bacteria. This helps to hold the odors down.
  • The detergents help keep the fragrances uniform, so you don’t smell one thing over another.
  • The actual fragrance masks anything you might not want to smell.
  • The dye is there to make everything turn blue. If you happen to look down into the tank, which we don’t recommend, you won’t see the things that are floating around down there.
  • The blue dye is also used as an indicator of when the fluid needs to be changed. When mixed with too much urea, the main ingredient in urine, the liquid turns green. Fortunately, most portable toilet companies are able to service the units before it reaches that point.

The History of Blue Liquid and Portable Restroom Deodorizer

In days of old, before toilets were invented, people used outhouses. These outhouses consisted of a shelter that would provide privacy and protection from the weather and a bench with a hole in it. This was placed over a hole in the ground where the wastes were deposited. When finished, the user would sprinkle some lye into the hole. The lye was meant to cover up the smell, but when mixed with urine, it creates ammonia. The strong smell of the ammonia was unpleasant, but since flies didn’t care for it, it seemed a good solution.

In addition to the smell, the lye has a special reaction when it comes into contact with human feces. It raises the pH of the waste which slows down decomposition while absorbing liquid. This reaction forms a kind of crust that help keep down the odor.

A big problem with lye is that it can burn human skin. Users had to be very careful not to spill any lye on the seat. Lye isn’t used for this purpose anymore.

Today, some people who live “off the grid” still use outhouses. Rather than using lye as mentioned above, they cover the waste with sawdust or wood ash. This process is similar to composting food scraps, but they use it for human waste.

Portable Toilets

Portable toilets have been around since the 1940s. They were first developed in shipyards to solve a problem. When the shopfitters needed to relieve themselves, they would have to leave their ships and walk all the way back to the restrooms on the dock. This was an inconvenience to be sure, but it also meant that they were spending less time on the job. The solution was to build some portable toilets closer to the work being done, save them the long walk, and thus increase productivity.

The first portable toilets were made of wood or metal. They were heavy, smelly, and hard to clean. The main chemical ingredient used in these early portable toilets was formaldehyde, which is also used for embalming bodies. Formaldehyde is good for killing most bacteria and fungi, and the smell keeps the flies away, but it’s not a good idea for use in chemical toilets.

Formaldehyde is a chemical compound made of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. Within the atmosphere, formaldehyde breaks down rapidly and creates harmful substances such as formic acid and carbon dioxide. When animals are exposed to it, it can make them sick, affect their behavior, appearance, and breeding patterns, and can significantly reduce their life spans. Obviously, keeping formaldehyde out of the environment is important. In addition to all of these effects on animals, formaldehyde interferes with the sewage breakdown processes in sewage plants.

Blue Stuff

Over the years, the science of portable toilets has evolved to where we are now. The toilets themselves have been designed to be lightweight, attractive (sort of), and easy to use. They have simple door locks for privacy and security, and they’re stocked with bathroom tissue of course, but more recently hand sanitizers and paper towels have been added for personal hygiene.

Today’s portable toilets use biologically friendly enzymes in order to help with odors and related health concerns. The liquid itself won’t hurt you if you come into contact with it, and not only is it effective, but it’s also an environmentally friendly solution.

When planning a large event such as a family reunion, garden party, music festival, or parade, there is a multitude of details to consider. How many people will be attending? How much food and drink will I need? What activities do you need to include? Do I need a permit from the local jurisdiction? What about parking? The list goes on and on.

Portable Toilets

While you’re working on all of that, don’t forget to think about sanitation. You may need to use portable toilets to accommodate all of the attendees. There are some very good reasons why portable toilets are a good solution to this problem.

Portable Toilet Rental in Edmonton

  • Portable toilets are sanitary and safe. You can depend on the rental company to deliver clean, secure, and self-contained toilets.
  • If your event is in an area without sufficient public restrooms, portable toilets are the solution to allow the attendees easy access to sanitary facilities.
  • Portable toilets eliminate the need for long lines at the restroom, and it’s easy to add more toilets as needed.
  • The cost of setting up portable toilets is surprisingly reasonable.
  • Handicap accessibility-Portable toilets are available in special models to accommodate those with disabilities.
  • Compliance with local regulations-There may be certain local regulations in regard to portable toilets. Specifically, there may be required permitting, rules regarding how many toilets you need to have for a certain size crowd, specific guidelines for how long you can leave them up, or how often you would be required to have them serviced.

Handwashing Stations

Since the onset of the coronavirus epidemic, there’s been an emphasis on hygiene and in particular, frequent washing of hands. Many of us learned how to use hand sanitizer for the first time, and it seems that rubber gloves are always in great demand. Enter the portable hand washing station.

If you’ve planned an outdoor event, handwashing stations offer you the opportunity to provide the attendees with fresh clean soap and water as an alternative to hand sanitizer.

The most common variety of hand washing station uses a foot pump to dispense the water. These stations come with soap and paper towels, and importantly, trash bins for the used towels. There are other models that give the choice of hot or cold water. These units however would need a power source both to build pressure and to heat the water, but they can be used for food preparation, first aid, or anything else that requires hot water.

Sanitation for Construction Sites

Providing sanitation facilities for construction sites is very important. If you’re constructing a new building, adding to an existing structure, or completing a remodeling or renovation of a private residence, you’ll need to provide your workers with portable toilets. Portable toilets will help to keep your job site safe, sanitary, and healthy. Here are some advantages to portable toilets on site.

Client privacy-If you’re working on a private residence, you won’t want your workers to be asking the residents for the use of their bathroom, as the client likely wouldn’t want workers going in and out of the house. The use of portable toilets eliminates this problem and makes your company look more professional.

Convenience-Your workers should be able to use the restroom when they need to, and they shouldn’t have to go looking for a public restroom. By having a portable toilet on site, they are able to take care of business and return to the job.

Productivity-Portable toilets were first used in shipyards. The workers would have to go all the way back to the dock to use the restroom, and the time they spent walking back and forth was time wasted. Portable toilets were then developed to allow them restroom breaks and a quick return to work, resulting in increased productivity.

Environmental concerns-Portable toilets are self-contained. The wastes from portable toilets are carried away to treatment plants, and this keeps those wastes from entering storm drains or groundwater. In addition, because they’re not flush toilets, portable toilets conserve a considerable volume of water.

Hand Washing Stations for Construction Sites

Handwashing stations allow construction worker to clean their hands before or after using a portable toilet, or more frequently if needed. They can reduce the risk of health issues which will mean fewer illness-related absences and greater productivity. In addition, providing your workers with handwashing stations tells your employees that you care about their health and welfare.

If you’re planning a big event, or if you’re preparing to set up a construction site, you’re likely going to need one or more portable toilets. Planning how many you’ll need and where you’ll locate them is crucial.

What are Portable Toilets?

A portable or mobile toilet is any type of toilet that can be moved around, some by one person, some by mechanical equipment such as a truck or crane. Most types do not require any pre-existing services or infrastructure, such as sewerage, but are completely self-contained.

Portable Toilets in Edmonton, AB

The need for portable toilets was first identified in shipyards in the 1940s when shipbuilders needed a place to relieve themselves. During this time, workers would have to walk all the way back to the dock to use the restroom which took time away from the project at hand and made it a hassle to get to the bathroom. Makeshift toilets were constructed of wood or metal, and some were outfitted with holding tanks, hence the first porta-pottie.

Modern portable toilets are usually made of fiberglass or plastic and have a holding tank to capture human waste. The tanks contain a liquid formulated to deodorize the tank, prevent the growth of odor-producing bacteria, hide unwelcome sights, and mask any unwanted smells.

Portable Toilets Contribute to a Cleaner Environment

There are several ways in which the use of portable toilets helps the environment.

  • Portable toilets conserve water-Since portable toilets don’t use water to flush, they save water. It’s estimated that portable toilets save 125 million gallons of water each day!
  • Portable toilets provide the proper disposal of waste-If not properly disposed of, human waste can contaminate groundwater and spread disease.
  • Portable toilets reduce the spread of disease among wildlife-Human waste can be very toxic to wildlife and it can be spread via human feet, animal paws, and hooves, and on the wings of insects.
  • Portable toilets protect vegetation from toxic waste-While relieving oneself against a tree or bush may seem harmless, but human waste can poison plant life with extra salts and other compounds.
  • Portable toilets protect the environment-Waste is contained in the toilets, then removed and sent off to be treated. This prevents the waste from washing into storm drains, streams, or rivers, contaminating drinking water and poisoning fish or other wildlife.

You need portable toilets. Where should you put them?

Convenience-Properly locating your portable toilets is important. On a construction site, you want them to be easily accessible. By placing them in a location close to your workers, you can improve productivity by reducing travel time. The closer the toilets are to the job, the better. If you’re using toilets for a concert or festival where you expect large crowds, set them up in more than one location for easy access from all areas of the event.

Avoid areas with clutter-Don’t position the toilets in an area where users will have to navigate around machinery or equipment to use the toilet.

Provide access for servicing-Place the toilets in an area where service vehicles can reach them easily.

Place them on level surfaces-On construction sites, it may be difficult to find a level surface to set the toilet, but it’s important to prevent the unit from tipping over.

Don’t place the toilet next to a curb-Curbs could present a tripping hazard while entering or exiting the toilet.

Restrict access-For construction sites, and keep your toilets fenced in or blocked off from the general public. Restricting access to your employees helps to keep the toilets cleaner and makes maintenance easier.

Prevent vandalism-Keeping your portable toilets secured will deter vandals from spraying graffiti or otherwise damaging the units. Placing them in well-lit areas with security cameras is your best option here.

High-rise applications- There are specialized portable toilets designed for high-rise construction projects. The design of these units makes them easy to lift or lower using cranes or elevators. They’re also compact enough to fit through doorways or into elevators.

Make sure you have an enough-The number of toilets you have is important. If you have too few, workers may have to wait in line, and that lowers productivity. You may also run afoul of safety regulations designed to protect your workers.

How many do we need? For a construction site, you’ll need 1 toilet for every ten workers.  If you’re setting up toilets for an event such as a concert or festival, a four-hour event will require 1 toilet for every 50 people. If alcohol consumption is part of the event, increase the number of toilets by 10-20%.

Portable toilets are a necessity for events or construction sites, and where you place them matters. Proper placement of the toilets will ensure safe and easy access to all the workers or attendees.

Fences come in many shapes, styles, and sizes. Permanent fencing is great if you want a durable, secure, safe, and long-lasting solution to your fencing needs, but what if you only need a fence for a short time?

Many fencing companies that offer permanent fencing also supply customers with temporary fencing, where a particular situation only requires fencing for a few days, weeks, or months. In those situations, temporary fencing is much more efficient and cost-effective than adding a permanent fence.

Temporary Fencing in Edmonton

What Is Temporary Fencing in Fort McMurray?

Temporary fencing is a fence that’s not installed permanently. Temporary fencing consists of chain link fence sections supported by feet or braces without supports in the ground.

Depending on the needs of the customer, temporary fencing may be set up to surround any area and the sections can be movable for greater flexibility. If desired, temporary fencing can be customized with gates or handrails. Temporary fencing can keep people, children, and pets away from danger while protecting you or your business from legal liability.

The cost of temporary fencing is very reasonable because you would only pay for the exact lengths of fencing that you need. This makes it much less expensive than permanent fencing.

Common Applications for Temporary Fencing

There are many situations where temporary fencing proves more efficient and cost-effective than any other barrier measures. Here are a few:

Carnivals, Concerts, Fairs, or Other Outdoor Events

During the summer months, carnivals, concerts, and fairs are very popular forms of entertainment, and crowds can range from a hundred or two up to the thousands. To make your event profitable, you need to be able to control who goes in and out. Temporary fencing is strong enough to effectively control the crowds, and the fencing can be set up and broken down very quickly.

Entertainment on Private Property

If you’re hosting a large party on your residential or business property, you may want to have some temporary fencing set up. This will allow parents to keep track of small children, ensure that only guests attend, and provide an additional layer of security.

Commercial Sites

Your property’s security represents an important part of your business plan. For many business sites, temporary fencing offers security and privacy, and it also provides a space for posting legal notices.

Construction Sites

On any construction site, security and safety are paramount until the job is finished and all leftover materials are removed. Your company’s liability is also an important concern as well. Temporary fencing will keep animals, children, and the general public safely away from the machinery and equipment being used. In addition, with temporary fencing surrounding the site, you can reduce or eliminate the risk of the theft of materials.

Parades or Road Races

Temporary fencing is frequently used in conjunction with parades and road races. During parades, the barriers will keep the crowds out of the way of the parade participants, and during races, they’ll keep vehicular traffic safely away from the racers.

Demonstrations

Public demonstrations can involve large crowds. Often, counter-protestors show up and tensions can run high, making for a bad situation if things get out of hand. Temporary fencing can help control demonstrations by keeping these parties separated.

Traffic Control

When road or construction projects require parts of roadways to be shut down temporarily, this type of fencing is ideal, as it can be set up, taken down, or moved with minimal effort.

Landscaping

If there’s a major landscaping job being carried out on your property, temporary fencing can protect the project from children or animals.

Dog Runs

Temporary fencing is ideal for setting up dog runs in your yard. They’re easy to move about and they’ll allow you to confine the dog’s activities like scratching or digging to a small space.

When you have a reason to use temporary fencing, you should reach out to the professionals at Fenceline Rentals. They can advise you on the specific products they can supply, tailored to the particular requirements of your project or event.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) promotes a safe and healthy working environment by providing occupational health and safety standards that must be followed by employers. Labour legislation falls primarily under the jurisdiction of Canada’s provinces and territories. However, the federal Labour Program is the occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory authority for workplaces designated under federal jurisdiction.

To comply with OHS standards, employers must keep the workplace clean, sanitary, and in good repair to eliminate risks to the health and safety of workers.

Job Sanitization in Edmonton

What is Jobsite Sanitation?

  • Employers are required to provide Jobsite sanitation facilities immediately available to all workers. This includes clean drinking water, toilets, waste bins, and washing facilities.

What Does Jobsite Sanitation Involve?

Jobsite sanitation requires the workers to be provided with the following facilities in order to comply with OHS regulations:

  • Fresh water that is safe to drink and meets the quality standards established by the Minister of National Health and Welfare. Any water sources that are not safe for drinking must be labeled as such.
  • Toilet facilities must be provided for all workers.
  • Washing stations are required at all job sites
  • Waste Bins are also required

Portable Sanitation Requirements on a Job Site

Employers are required to provide toilet facilities for all workers. If no sanitary sewer facilities are available at a particular job site, privies, chemical toilets, recirculating toilets, or combustion toilets must be provided.

The number of toilets required is based on the number of workers at the site:

  • 20 workers or less- one toilet
  • 20 or more workers-1 toilet seats and 1 urinal per 40 workers
  • 200 or more workers-1 toilet seats and 1 urinal per 50 workers
  • Under temporary field conditions, not less than one toilet must be available.

If workers are doing any painting, coating, herbicide or insecticide spraying, or any other construction tasks where contaminants may harm them, washing stations must be provided and must meet the following requirements:

  • Each washing station or lavatory must have hot and cold running water or tepid running water
  • Each washing station must have hand soap or similar products. Some work types may require specialized personal cleaning products.
  • Each washing station must have individual hand towels, warm air blowers, or clean individual sections of continuous cloth toweling.
  • Waste bins are also required on every job site, again to keep the work areas safe and clean.

Benefits of Jobsite Sanitation

Jobsite sanitation provides many benefits to workers as well as to employers:

  • Healthy environment-Jobsite sanitation will ensure that all waste is held in one area of your job site and regularly removed by the toilet providers.
  • Employee Satisfaction-Brief bathroom breaks are accommodated by having a sufficient number of portable toilets onsite. This helps the employees to finish their work in a timely manner and without added hassles.
  • Enhanced Productivity-It’s been proven that happy employees are more productive. Having an adequate supply of toilets, washing stations, and potable water makes for a more pleasant working situation.

When fencing a site makes sense for outdoor festivals, sales events, employee functions, parties, or construction, portable fencing is often the smartest solution.

What is Portable Fencing?

Portable fencing consists of chain link fence sections that can be set up in many different configurations to temporarily surround an area when a permanent fence isn’t required. Depending on the needs of the customer, temporary fencing may be set up to surround any area and the sections can be movable for greater flexibility.

Temporary Fencing in Edmonton

What Types Of Construction Fences Are Available in Calgary?

Portable temporary fencing is used on job sites that need to maintain a level of security during construction. Temporary fencing is available in a number of different configurations:

  • Temporary Fence Panels-Construction fences can be set up with fence panels that don’t require any anchoring into the ground, as in a situation where the panels will cross a paved area.
  • Driven Panels-Temporary fencing where posts are driven into the ground provides a sturdier security option than simple temporary panels.
  • Permanent Temporary Fencing-A temporary fencing system that requires a concrete footing and specified pipe dimension is usually used on military installations or other government property.

Reasons to Rent Temporary Fencing

There are several reasons why temporary fencing works well for construction sites, outdoor events, or parties:

  • Compliance with health and safety regulations-Many local jurisdictions establish specific requirements for construction sites or other events, so as to protect the health and safety of the workers or participants.
  • Cost-Temporary fencing is less expensive than permanent fencing because its cost is only calculated on the exact footage needed.
  • It’s quick and easy to install-Temporary fencing can be set up and removed very quickly
  • Versatility-Temporary fencing can be set up in any configuration to meet your specific needs.
  • No property damage-Unlike permanent fencing, temporary fencing doesn’t cause property damage because the installation and removal processes are less invasive to the site.
  • Security-Temporary fencing protects your construction site from those who would trespass. When used for an event, temporary fencing keeps out those who are not supposed to be there.

Benefits Of Temporary Fencing And Situations Where It Makes Sense

Temporary fencing provides many benefits, and there are several different reasons customers rent temporary fencing:

  • Carnivals, concerts, or fairs-When you are hosting these types of events, it’s absolutely critical to control how people enter and exit the location.

What are Portable Toilets?

Modern portable toilets were first conceived during World War II.  The owners of the shipyards in Long Beach, New Jersey, realized that the employees were losing a lot of valuable work time in the long trek from the ships back to the docks to answer nature’s call. They decided to construct small, portable cubicles that were made with wood or metal and contained a small holding tank. As a result, workers were happier and more productive, and this invention marked the start of the portable toilet industry.

  • Executive hard sided toilets-These are more upscale and are comfortable even in the winter. They’re very sturdy and have a poly tank and base. They come with a 1250-watt force air baseboard heater with a thermostat. These bathrooms also feature a light, deadbolt locking system, and coat hook.
  • Insulated toilets- These offer an economical solution for heated bathrooms at your worksite. They have a forced air heater to keep the unit at a comfortable temperature in even the coldest weather. These units include an insulated cover that helps to keep the interior warm.
  • Wheelchair-accessible toilets-These units are designed to accommodate individuals who use wheelchairs. The wider doorways and ground-level floor access make this unit easy to access. The unit also features smooth handrails inside, and the door is self-closing.
  • High rise toilets-These are designed specifically for use at high-rise construction sites. These units are much smaller and lighter, making them easy to lift by crane or elevator into higher portions of the building construction, and they’re narrow enough to fit through doorways and onto elevators.

We’ve all seen portable toilets at construction sites, but here are a few other uses of portable toilets:

  • Movie Sets
  • Natural Disasters
  • Special Events
  • Road Races
  • Campgrounds
  • Weddings
  • Private Parties
  • Parades

Renting or purchasing portable toilets offers many benefits to you and your workers:

  • Customization-The number of portable toilets and their configuration at a job site or event is totally flexible and can be updated quickly as the customer’s needs change
  • Eco friendly-As stated earlier, portable toilets use far less water than regular flush toilets.
  • Sanitary-The use of portable toilets offers a flexible way to comply with CCOHS standards for Jobsite sanitation.
  • Safety & Efficiency-Providing portable washrooms is an excellent way to increase productivity, safety, and efficiency, as well as keep workers happy and comfortable.

Dogs are full of energy, and they like nothing better than to run and run and run! However, you can’t just let your dog out and let him go where he will!  Most communities have some kind of leash laws that require you to keep your dog under control at all times when you’re out of your yard.

Keeping your dog contained in your yard is a necessity but can sometimes be a challenge. You don’t want your dog to be running around the neighborhood tipping over garbage cans, diggings holes, and terrorizing other pets and small children! On the contrary, your dog needs to be somewhere safe where you can monitor his behavior.

Dog Run Fencing in Edmonton

What are Dog Runs?

A dog run is either a private or public fenced-off area in which a dog can be kept confined and still get exercise. Since most dogs will get into just about anything, a private area keeps them safe from potential hazards such as poisonous plants, chemicals, or the street. Your dog run may be located on one side of a house or yard or may be placed at the back of the yard. A portable run can keep an animal out of trouble while he is still learning to behave.

People with relatively small dogs, except most terriers, may only need a small run. Some larger dogs are not known exercisers either. Working dogs, especially herding dogs, usually require a larger space — they can feel confined in a run that is too small. Unless the owner plans to offer the dog other forms of exercise daily, a longer run will be needed for dogs with lots of energy, since keeping them active often helps keep undesirable behaviors in check.

What are dog runs made of?

Most dog runs are constructed of chain link fencing material and can be simply a square or rectangular shape. If your dog is a jumper, you may also want to have a roof on your dog run, which would also be made of chain link fencing material. Some dog runs are part of a kennel and include sleeping quarters or a doghouse for the dog. In this case, the person who plans the run may want to put it near a water source so that there is easily accessible water for the dog. The dog should have fresh water available at all times and a shaded area where it can rest on hot days.

Benefits of a Dog Run

Here are some benefits of adding a dog run to your yard:

  • Creates a safe space for dogs to play, sleep and relax outdoors
  • Gives dogs the ability to run freely without supervision
  • Separates dogs from areas like gardens, pools, and other backyard attractions
  • Keeps your natural grass from browning due to dog urine

Whether you are looking to create a dog run for your dog, or you need temporary fencing while renovations are completed, FenceLine Rentals can provide a selection of fencing and gate options at an affordable price.

Your project is about to start! You have prepared all the logistics and materials are beginning to be delivered.  But wait! Are you certain that your materials will be safe from curious passersby?  Are you sure that you have protected spaces that could potentially become dangerous? Is your site secure?

These are all important questions that you need to answer before beginning your project. Crime statistics show that construction equipment theft results in significant losses- over $1,000,000,000 with less than a 20% recovery rate. It’s important, then, to talk about ways to protect your site from accidents as well as from robbery and trespassing, in general.

The easiest and most cost-effective way to maintain site safety and security is with temporary fencing. Here are a few more components to consider before obtaining your temporary fence.

Temporary Fence at Edmonton Construction Site

How high will your fence be?

The taller the fence the harder it is to climb. Our temporary fencing comes in 4, 6, and 8-foot heights. You are more secure going with the 8-foot heights because it is a better deterrent for impulse vandals and trespassers.  Also, our narrow mesh acts as additional protection as the size makes climbing the fence much more challenging.

How many gates will you have?

The more gates you have the easier your perimeter is to breach. Minimize the number of gates through the perimeter if possible.  This is also important for general liability as you can control traffic coming and going from the site with just one construction entrance. Narrower gates are better, but make sure they’re at least 20 feet wide to allow access for emergency vehicles.   Gates should be operational by one person.  Try to avoid wheels dragging on the ground.  Gates should be cantilevered so that the gate swings freely over temporary rock surfaces.

How can you secure your fence and gates?

Ideally, the fence is set with posts driven into the ground.  This is not always possible so using sandbags is necessary to secure the fence over the paving.  Make sure your fence contractor provides at least two sandbags per post. Gates may be secured with chains and padlocks or with other precautionary measures.

Do employees park inside or outside the fence?

You will see a decrease in equipment and material loss if you require others to park outside the fence and have controlled access.

Do you have adequate fence signage?

It is not enough to simply have a physical barrier.  You must have adequate signage that explicitly tells others to stay out and stay clear.  Though it may be obvious; for insurance purposes, it will significantly reduce your liability if you communicate a clear message.
