The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) promotes a safe and healthy working environment by providing occupational health and safety standards that must be followed by employers. Labour legislation falls primarily under the jurisdiction of Canada’s provinces and territories. However, the federal Labour Program is the occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory authority for workplaces designated under federal jurisdiction.

To comply with OHS standards, employers must keep the workplace clean, sanitary, and in good repair to eliminate risks to the health and safety of workers.

Job Sanitization in Edmonton

What is Jobsite Sanitation?

  • Employers are required to provide Jobsite sanitation facilities immediately available to all workers. This includes clean drinking water, toilets, waste bins, and washing facilities.

What Does Jobsite Sanitation Involve?

Jobsite sanitation requires the workers to be provided with the following facilities in order to comply with OHS regulations:

  • Fresh water that is safe to drink and meets the quality standards established by the Minister of National Health and Welfare. Any water sources that are not safe for drinking must be labeled as such.
  • Toilet facilities must be provided for all workers.
  • Washing stations are required at all job sites
  • Waste Bins are also required

Portable Sanitation Requirements on a Job Site

Employers are required to provide toilet facilities for all workers. If no sanitary sewer facilities are available at a particular job site, privies, chemical toilets, recirculating toilets, or combustion toilets must be provided.

The number of toilets required is based on the number of workers at the site:

  • 20 workers or less- one toilet
  • 20 or more workers-1 toilet seats and 1 urinal per 40 workers
  • 200 or more workers-1 toilet seats and 1 urinal per 50 workers
  • Under temporary field conditions, not less than one toilet must be available.

If workers are doing any painting, coating, herbicide or insecticide spraying, or any other construction tasks where contaminants may harm them, washing stations must be provided and must meet the following requirements:

  • Each washing station or lavatory must have hot and cold running water or tepid running water
  • Each washing station must have hand soap or similar products. Some work types may require specialized personal cleaning products.
  • Each washing station must have individual hand towels, warm air blowers, or clean individual sections of continuous cloth toweling.
  • Waste bins are also required on every job site, again to keep the work areas safe and clean.

Benefits of Jobsite Sanitation

Jobsite sanitation provides many benefits to workers as well as to employers:

  • Healthy environment-Jobsite sanitation will ensure that all waste is held in one area of your job site and regularly removed by the toilet providers.
  • Employee Satisfaction-Brief bathroom breaks are accommodated by having a sufficient number of portable toilets onsite. This helps the employees to finish their work in a timely manner and without added hassles.
  • Enhanced Productivity-It’s been proven that happy employees are more productive. Having an adequate supply of toilets, washing stations, and potable water makes for a more pleasant working situation.

When fencing a site makes sense for outdoor festivals, sales events, employee functions, parties, or construction, portable fencing is often the smartest solution.

What is Portable Fencing?

Portable fencing consists of chain link fence sections that can be set up in many different configurations to temporarily surround an area when a permanent fence isn’t required. Depending on the needs of the customer, temporary fencing may be set up to surround any area and the sections can be movable for greater flexibility.

Temporary Fencing in Edmonton

What Types Of Construction Fences Are Available in Calgary?

Portable temporary fencing is used on job sites that need to maintain a level of security during construction. Temporary fencing is available in a number of different configurations:

  • Temporary Fence Panels-Construction fences can be set up with fence panels that don’t require any anchoring into the ground, as in a situation where the panels will cross a paved area.
  • Driven Panels-Temporary fencing where posts are driven into the ground provides a sturdier security option than simple temporary panels.
  • Permanent Temporary Fencing-A temporary fencing system that requires a concrete footing and specified pipe dimension is usually used on military installations or other government property.

Reasons to Rent Temporary Fencing

There are several reasons why temporary fencing works well for construction sites, outdoor events, or parties:

  • Compliance with health and safety regulations-Many local jurisdictions establish specific requirements for construction sites or other events, so as to protect the health and safety of the workers or participants.
  • Cost-Temporary fencing is less expensive than permanent fencing because its cost is only calculated on the exact footage needed.
  • It’s quick and easy to install-Temporary fencing can be set up and removed very quickly
  • Versatility-Temporary fencing can be set up in any configuration to meet your specific needs.
  • No property damage-Unlike permanent fencing, temporary fencing doesn’t cause property damage because the installation and removal processes are less invasive to the site.
  • Security-Temporary fencing protects your construction site from those who would trespass. When used for an event, temporary fencing keeps out those who are not supposed to be there.

Benefits Of Temporary Fencing And Situations Where It Makes Sense

Temporary fencing provides many benefits, and there are several different reasons customers rent temporary fencing:

  • Carnivals, concerts, or fairs-When you are hosting these types of events, it’s absolutely critical to control how people enter and exit the location.
  • Commercial sites-Your site’s security represents an important part of your business plan. For many business sites, temporary fencing offers security and privacy, and it also provides a space for posting legal notices.
  • Construction sites-Safety is paramount in the construction business. For this reason, most construction sites use temporary fencing to keep animals, children, and the general public out of harm’s way.
  • Entertainment on private property-If you are inviting guests over for a party on your residential or business property, you may want to consider temporary fencing. This will allow parents to keep track of small children, ensure that only invited guests attend, and provide an added layer of security.
  • Parades or demonstrations-Large crowds of people can become difficult to control quickly, especially in emotional situations. Temporary fencing can be used to line a parade route and reduce cross traffic while the parade is in progress.

What are Portable Toilets?

Modern portable toilets were first conceived during World War II.  The owners of the shipyards in Long Beach, New Jersey, realized that the employees were losing a lot of valuable work time in the long trek from the ships back to the docks to answer nature’s call. They decided to construct small, portable cubicles that were made with wood or metal and contained a small holding tank. As a result, workers were happier and more productive, and this invention marked the start of the portable toilet industry.

Portable Toilet Rental in Edmonton

Here are a few facts about portable toilets that may surprise you:

The Widest Variety of Portable Toilets

There are several types of modern portable toilets, each designed for the specific needs of the customer. At Fenceline Rentals, Ltd. we have all of these toilets in stock and ready to deliver to your job site or event venue.

  • Standard blue toilets-These are the ones you’ll see most often. Each one contains a toilet, a urinal, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer.
  • Executive hard sided toilets-These are more upscale and are comfortable even in the winter. They’re very sturdy and have a poly tank and base. They come with a 1250-watt force air baseboard heater with a thermostat. These bathrooms also feature a light, deadbolt locking system, and coat hook.
  • Insulated toilets- These offer an economical solution for heated bathrooms at your worksite. They have a forced air heater to keep the unit at a comfortable temperature in even the coldest weather. These units include an insulated cover that helps to keep the interior warm.
  • Wheelchair-accessible toilets-These units are designed to accommodate individuals who use wheelchairs. The wider doorways and ground-level floor access make this unit easy to access. The unit also features smooth handrails inside, and the door is self-closing.
  • High rise toilets-These are designed specifically for use at high-rise construction sites. These units are much smaller and lighter, making them easy to lift by crane or elevator into higher portions of the building construction, and they’re narrow enough to fit through doorways and onto elevators.

We’ve all seen portable toilets at construction sites, but here are a few other uses of portable toilets:

  • Movie Sets
  • Natural Disasters
  • Special Events
  • Road Races
  • Campgrounds
  • Weddings
  • Private Parties
  • Parades

Renting or purchasing portable toilets offers many benefits to you and your workers:

  • Customization-The number of portable toilets and their configuration at a job site or event is totally flexible and can be updated quickly as the customer’s needs change
  • Eco friendly-As stated earlier, portable toilets use far less water than regular flush toilets.
  • Sanitary-The use of portable toilets offers a flexible way to comply with CCOHS standards for Jobsite sanitation.
  • Safety & Efficiency-Providing portable washrooms is an excellent way to increase productivity, safety, and efficiency, as well as keep workers happy and comfortable.

Dogs are full of energy, and they like nothing better than to run and run and run! However, you can’t just let your dog out and let him go where he will!  Most communities have some kind of leash laws that require you to keep your dog under control at all times when you’re out of your yard.

Keeping your dog contained in your yard is a necessity but can sometimes be a challenge. You don’t want your dog to be running around the neighborhood tipping over garbage cans, diggings holes, and terrorizing other pets and small children! On the contrary, your dog needs to be somewhere safe where you can monitor his behavior.

Dog Run Fencing in Edmonton

What are Dog Runs?

A dog run is either a private or public fenced-off area in which a dog can be kept confined and still get exercise. Since most dogs will get into just about anything, a private area keeps them safe from potential hazards such as poisonous plants, chemicals, or the street. Your dog run may be located on one side of a house or yard or may be placed at the back of the yard. A portable run can keep an animal out of trouble while he is still learning to behave.

People with relatively small dogs, except most terriers, may only need a small run. Some larger dogs are not known exercisers either. Working dogs, especially herding dogs, usually require a larger space — they can feel confined in a run that is too small. Unless the owner plans to offer the dog other forms of exercise daily, a longer run will be needed for dogs with lots of energy, since keeping them active often helps keep undesirable behaviors in check.

What are dog runs made of?

Most dog runs are constructed of chain link fencing material and can be simply a square or rectangular shape. If your dog is a jumper, you may also want to have a roof on your dog run, which would also be made of chain link fencing material. Some dog runs are part of a kennel and include sleeping quarters or a doghouse for the dog. In this case, the person who plans the run may want to put it near a water source so that there is easily accessible water for the dog. The dog should have fresh water available at all times and a shaded area where it can rest on hot days.

Benefits of a Dog Run

Here are some benefits of adding a dog run to your yard:

  • Creates a safe space for dogs to play, sleep and relax outdoors
  • Gives dogs the ability to run freely without supervision
  • Separates dogs from areas like gardens, pools, and other backyard attractions
  • Keeps your natural grass from browning due to dog urine

Whether you are looking to create a dog run for your dog, or you need temporary fencing while renovations are completed, FenceLine Rentals can provide a selection of fencing and gate options at an affordable price.

Your project is about to start! You have prepared all the logistics and materials are beginning to be delivered.  But wait! Are you certain that your materials will be safe from curious passersby?  Are you sure that you have protected spaces that could potentially become dangerous? Is your site secure?

These are all important questions that you need to answer before beginning your project. Crime statistics show that construction equipment theft results in significant losses- over $1,000,000,000 with less than a 20% recovery rate. It’s important, then, to talk about ways to protect your site from accidents as well as from robbery and trespassing, in general.

The easiest and most cost-effective way to maintain site safety and security is with temporary fencing. Here are a few more components to consider before obtaining your temporary fence.

Temporary Fence at Edmonton Construction Site

How high will your fence be?

The taller the fence the harder it is to climb. Our temporary fencing comes in 4, 6, and 8-foot heights. You are more secure going with the 8-foot heights because it is a better deterrent for impulse vandals and trespassers.  Also, our narrow mesh acts as additional protection as the size makes climbing the fence much more challenging.

How many gates will you have?

The more gates you have the easier your perimeter is to breach. Minimize the number of gates through the perimeter if possible.  This is also important for general liability as you can control traffic coming and going from the site with just one construction entrance. Narrower gates are better, but make sure they’re at least 20 feet wide to allow access for emergency vehicles.   Gates should be operational by one person.  Try to avoid wheels dragging on the ground.  Gates should be cantilevered so that the gate swings freely over temporary rock surfaces.

How can you secure your fence and gates?

Ideally, the fence is set with posts driven into the ground.  This is not always possible so using sandbags is necessary to secure the fence over the paving.  Make sure your fence contractor provides at least two sandbags per post. Gates may be secured with chains and padlocks or with other precautionary measures.

Do employees park inside or outside the fence?

You will see a decrease in equipment and material loss if you require others to park outside the fence and have controlled access.

Do you have adequate fence signage?

It is not enough to simply have a physical barrier.  You must have adequate signage that explicitly tells others to stay out and stay clear.  Though it may be obvious; for insurance purposes, it will significantly reduce your liability if you communicate a clear message.

Winters in Canada are among some of the harshest in the world!  In Alberta, it is common to experience temperatures that average -14 degrees Celsius and an average snowfall of 6.86 cm a month.  If you are working outdoors, these temperatures can prove to be problematic.  It is important to prepare yourself as well as your worksite for the cold weather. Portable toilets are a must for many jobsites.  Being proactive and putting in the work of preparation is key, so, let’s talk about some tips for winterizing your portable toilets.

Winterization Of Portable Toilets

Natural Solutions

Mother Nature can become a beast and present harsh winter conditions.  Instead of only focusing on fighting the weather, though, consider ways that you can use the benefits of nature in order to create solutions for the location of your outdoor portable toilet.  How can nature, or at least the outdoors, provide solutions?

Sun

Solar energy is an amazing resource! Try placing the portable toilet in direct sunlight in order to harness the warmth it can provide. If there is no location that can accommodate the crucial need for heat, you might consider a portable heater in the area where the outdoor portable toilet is located. It is important to be certain that these are turned off daily for safety purposes. Having set hours for a heater to be on/ off can create a routine that provides the necessary safety precautions for your environment.

Shelter

Use a structure- fence or building or even bushes- to create a barrier and decrease wind exposure which can quickly cause temperatures to drop even further. If there is no available structure, you may consider temporarily moving the portable toilet to a temporary indoor location, such as into a garage or shed.

Snow

As snow falls, it may begin to surround the base of the portable toilet. Be sure to clear snow from around the area in order to protect the temperature of the liquids and chemicals inside of the toilet. The addition of sandbags around the exterior base can also create a barrier of insulation that can assist in the prevention of freezing the toilet’s liquid.

Treatments

Just as in warmer seasons, your portable toilets will still need to be serviced to maintain healthy and sanitary conditions.  In order to keep the toilets more equipped for the winter season, there are several options, dependent upon the temperature and availability.

Salty Brine

Just as with roads and being able to drive safely during wintery conditions, salt can be used in portable toilets. Salt reduces the freezing point for liquids.  Adding a salty mixture to the liquid can help prevent solidification of the liquids up to (or down to) a certain point.

Antifreeze

Antifreeze can be mixed in with the deodorizing water that is placed in the tank. It works to keep the water liquid and unfrozen in colder climates. All the antifreeze products and other chemicals must be acceptable for disposal at local wastewater facilities.

Chloride Pellet Mix

One of the most effective ways to winterize an outdoor portable toilet is to add a chloride pellet into the toilet bowl solution.  These pellets are able to act as insulation and can withstand temperatures as low as -31 degrees Celsius. While effective, the chloride pellet mix has a one-week lifespan, so be sure that you have requested services accordingly.

Preparing for outdoor events can be exciting!  Whether you are planning for a special occasion or for the excitement and promise of a construction site, including outdoor toilets in your plan is essential to the success of your event or project!

All the logistics can become a bit overwhelming, so let us help! Here are 5 essential steps to keeping your portable toilets clean!

  1. Be prepared for the number of people at your worksite or event.
  2. Keep your portable toilet serviced
  3. Maintain a sufficient supply of hygiene products.
  4. Deodorize!
  5. Be prepared for the weather!

Portable Toilets Rental in Edmonton

Be prepared for the number of people at your worksite or event!

Order enough units! Knowing the number of people needing to access as well as the duration of guests’ stay is critical to the success of the unit.  They typical rule for the accommodations is that, for 4 hours, you need 1 portable toilet per 50 individuals. If there is food and/ or alcohol at the event, this number may need to increase slightly.  Additionally, more portable toilets are needed if there are significantly more women than men and the total should increase by 10%-20%. If the portable toilets are being used for a work site, a good number is one toilet per 10 workers.

Keep your portable toilet serviced.

Bad smells in a portable toilet are a direct indication of the lack of cleanliness, health, and safety. Depending on the usage, a portable toilet should be cleaned once a week. A unit should be completely pumped and the hose should be all of the ways at the bottom and to the side in order to prevent debris from being sucked and clogged in the hose. When a portable toilet is cleaned, the septic tank is refilled with an additive that breaks down and cleans the waste.  When cleaning, the door to the unit should be kept open, allowing the odors and air to circulate. Fresh air is also important to provide between cleanings. Cleaning surfaces (floors and other surfaces) with warm, soapy water with, perhaps, a pressure water gun removes the most germs. Routine cleaning and maintenance ensure the health, safety, and integrity of the toilet. The waste can be hazardous if not disposed of carefully and properly.  Therefore, waste management should be performed by a certified and regulated company for the best maintenance and safety of the toilets.

Maintain a sufficient supply of hygiene products.

Don’t leave your frequenters guessing!  Supply your units and help those in need fully supplied with resources of hygiene products. Handwashing stations, soap, paper towels, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and disinfectant wipes are all fundamental in keeping portable toilets fully functioning. When your toilets are supplied and clear expectations are set, it is easier for those using it to fall in line and help with the basics.

Deodorize!

Cleaning portable toilets and keeping them supplied are important, but don’t forget that having products to control odors is also helpful.  Most professionals rely on products with the deepest blue colors in them to control and mask odors and sights. These products should contain 4 main components: biocides, dyes, fragrances, and surfactants. Just like you, showering and scrubbing are crucial but deodorant is key for the in-between times!

Be prepared for the weather.

Everyone knows that portable toilets get a bad rap for having foul odors!  This doesn’t have to be the case, though, if chemistry and some knowledge are involved in preparations! During the warmer seasons of the year, a portable toilet’s temperature can far exceed that of the outdoors. This is an excellent condition for growing bacteria. The right balance of chemicals can substantially reduce the unpleasant odors that are created. Likewise, in the extreme cold, the chemicals in the septic tank can freeze, creating unique and smelly challenges.  Adding a salty brine will reduce the freezing point and allow the chemicals to perform more effectively.

Portable toilets are a wonderful asset to an outdoor event.  But, let’s face it, they can provide either a positive or not-so-positive experience depending on their conditions.  As with most things in life, preparation is key!

When planning for an outdoor event, all the elements as well as traffic flow and the number of attendees should be carefully considered.  The weather conditions alone can have a huge impact on the cleanliness and functionality of your portable toilets, particularly during festivals and races or other athletic events when guests are coming and going through potentially muddy areas. Windy conditions can also cause your portable toilets to become unsafe.

Don’t become bogged down with the weight of these decisions! We at FenceLine Rentals Ltd. have some suggestions for keeping your portable toilets clean and fully functional! Let’s explore ways that you can be ready to create the most positive portable toilet experience possible for your guests!

Portable Toilets in Edmonton

Management of your Portable Toilets

Hard surfaces and flat spaces, such as parking lots, provide stability and mess-free areas that can reduce mud from being tracked in and causing slippery and dirty conditions.  Additionally, it may be more possible to place portable toilets near a building or fence, which would provide a natural wind barrier and can prevent it from being blown over.

We realize that, while parking lots are ideal, they are not always convenient or available. If it is necessary to place portable toilets on the grass, gravel, or dirt area, there are a few other options as well.  Portable toilets may be covered to block rain and strong winds, staked for security, or may use a special step platform with a rubber mat to prevent mud from entering the toilet cubical by allowing it to drain through the mat.

Knowing the number of people needing to access as well as the duration of guests’ stay is critical to the success of the unit.  The typical rule for the accommodations is that, for 4 hours, you need 1 portable toilet per 50 individuals. If there is food and/ or alcohol at the event, this number may need to increase slightly.  Additionally, more portable toilets are needed if there are significantly more women than men and the total should increase by 10%-20%.

If the portable toilets are being used for a work site, a good number is one toilet per 10 workers.

No matter the location or duration, preparing the space and knowing the number of people you will be serving is vital to the ease and success at which your portable toilets may be accessed and used.

Essentials for Maintenance

Bad smells in a portable toilet are a direct indication of the lack of cleanliness, health, and safety. Depending on the usage, a portable toilet should be cleaned once a week. A unit should be completely pumped, and the hose should be all of the ways at the bottom and to the side in order to prevent debris from being sucked and clogged in the hose.

Facts about Portable Toilets

  • Flushable toilets were invented in 1596 but were not used until 1851.  Portable toilets were not invented until the 1940s!
  • Portable toilets are actually safer than flushing toilets because flushing allows germs to become airborne, thus spreading diseases into the air.

What is a Handwashing Station?

Handwashing stations are quite an invention! A Handwashing station is a portable sink that can be easily delivered to any location in order to have a safe, efficient, and eco-friendly way to wash hands without even requiring plumbing.

For several years now our world and its communities have been isolated and cautious. As we begin to reenter our lives with attention to the requirement of a “new normal” after a pandemic, communities are starting to gather in large groups again.  Concerts, school and sporting events, parties, festivals, and more are returning to the calendars and budgets for many people.  However, health and safety are still a concern for us all, as they should be.

FenceLine Rentals Ltd. would like to help you with your event planning needs. Our team is here to help you think through the benefits of things, such as handwashing stations, and how they may provide the safest environment for your outdoor gatherings.

Many Advantages of Renting Handwashing Stations

Handwashing stations are an easy and efficient way to ensure that the guests at your event are doing as much as they can to maintain that clean hygiene that will prevent the spread of many germs as well as allergens.

Here are some benefits of handwashing:

  • Ensure Cleanliness and Comfort for all Guests
  • Easily Adaptable
  • Prevent Food Contamination
  • Give your event a good reputation
  • An eco-friendly way to sanitize

Ensure Cleanliness and Comfort for all Guests

Handwashing is one of the best ways to remove bacteria and avoid bacterial illnesses.  It takes less than a minute but can deeply impact the overall health and hygiene of individuals and, especially, large crowds.  Not only bacteria, but allergens are removed when washing hands.  Did you know that in allergens, for example peanut butter, hand sanitizer does not remove the proteins that cause an allergic reaction? For the safety of all your guests, the ability to thoroughly wash hands can be a life-saving technique.

Handwashing should be a habit before and after eating, after using the toilet, after blowing your nose or coughing or sneezing, after touching or feeding animals (are you having a petting zoo at your event), and after touching garbage.

Easily Adaptable

Handwashing stations are highly versatile. These outdoor portable sinks have all the advantages of traditional sinks and more. They can be used in any outdoor event, festivals, parties, concerts, weddings, and even construction. It’s easy to find an outdoor sink that matches your needs. They are the perfect addition for any outdoor event, including.  These stations allow attendees and workers to remain outdoors but have all the benefits of handwashing that is typically provided by indoor plumbing.

Prevent Food Contamination

Improper hand washing is one of the leading causes of food contamination at parties. The germs of one single person can impact many guests at your party or event. Proper handwashing means that those who have gathered can stay healthier throughout the event and even after.

Give your event a good reputation

Let’s face it.  Portable toilets have a negative connotation because of their stereotypical smell.  Do your part in changing the portable experience by bringing a portable handwashing station into the equation.  A fresh and clean handwashing station (outside of a portable toilet) allows the space, smells, and complete scenario for providing that fresh, clean experience.  Hand sanitizer may do some work to reduce the spread of germs, but nothing compares to handwashing!

Ecofriendly way to sanitize

Portable handwashing stations are designed with the environment in mind.  They are durable, portable, and made from recyclable material. They protect and care for the environment by making more effective use of water. Portable sinks have their own tank, which allows them to be self-sufficient and work without connection to the sewage networks. Technicians empty these tanks and then transporting the waste to the nearest treatment plant for its correct treatment. It’s a win-win!
